02 March 2006\n\nThe fact that the European Commissions' plan to promote digital access to Europe's heritage is rapidly taking shape is inline with the plans of ~IN2 to to play a significant role in making audiovisual content in Europe easy accessible and searchable. At least six million books, documents and other cultural works will be made available to anyone with a Web connection through the European Digital Library over the next five years. In order to boost European digitisation efforts, the Commission will co-fund the creation of a Europe-wide network of digitisation centres. The Commission will also address, in a series of policy documents, the issue of the appropriate framework for intellectual property rights protection in the context of digital libraries. 01 November 2007\n~IN2 participates in the http://www.gama-gateway.eu (GAMA), a recent project co-funded by the eContentPlus Programme of the European Commission. The project aims to develop a European gateway for media art and to provide advanced indexing and search interfaces for media art content. \n\nThe consortium comprises a majority of the most important digital content holders for media art in Europe and holds approximately 55% of all media artworks presented online by European cultural archives and distributors. The gateway will quickly develop to be the European central online interface and search portal for any person interested in media art. ~IN2 will apply its award-wining visual search technology in the project and is in charge of GAMA's project office. If you would like to receive more information please Contact us! News\n\nAdditional information in the GAMA - Gateway to Archives of Media Art was launched\n\n<<tiddler HideTiddlerToolbar>> <<tiddler HideTiddlerSubtitle>> <<tiddler HideTiddlerTags>>
14 December 2007\n\nThe main objective of the interdisciplinary project http://www.gama-gateway.eu launched on November 1, 2007 by 19 participating organisations from Europe’s culture, art and technology sector, is to establish a common online access to European archives of media art. The European Commission co-funds this endeavour to develop an online portal to different European media art collections for the interested public, for curators, artists, academics, researchers, and mediators. The individual archives will be able to integrate their content into a European context dealing with media art and make it available to a wider public.\n\nMediation of Media Art\nIn recent years, many art video collections and institutions from the media culture sector started to digitise their content and archives and to systematically record and assess the artworks and the documentation of ephemeral art and presentation forms into databases. The different activities range from preservation of the artefacts for future generations to enhancement of access to media art for improved reception in research and education. Today, online information on media artworks is still scarce. It is clear that there is a large difference between the presentation of an artwork in a museum or a museum-like environment and the formats used for the documentation and presentation of artworks on the Internet and that with the exception of net art, the online formats cannot adequately meet the aesthetic demands required by the artwork within a real-space presentation context. On the other hand, the online representation and the networking of archives constitute an important contribution to the dissemination of the artworks and their mediation in a multimedia format.\n\nEnhanced Access\nThe network created by GAMA allows for a simultaneous access to different collections. In addition to the traditional presentation of the collection’s single works, the user will see at one glance if a work is present in more than one collection, what sort of carrier it is recorded on and what further information exists. These insights are cumbersome to obtain at present for both the novice and the expert user. It requires a tedious search through single archives with their different set-ups if they are to be found online at all.\n\nThe result of a two years’ work of the GAMA team will be a media art gateway based on an architecture that orchestrates the manifold content information and diverse structures to allow for a consolidated query performance without losing perspective of the heterogeneity of the archives. The great challenge is the contextualisation of the content in the face of the diversified repositories, database structures, annotations and descriptions. The GAMA portal is part of a wider endeavour and will provide interfaces to connect to the European Digital Library.\n\nNext to the technical requirements, adequate solutions for content issues such as how to present the different focus of each archive from multiple European backgrounds in a common platform and how to deal with the requirements and priorities of the different user groups, will be drawn. The archives hold a large collection of video art, video documentation of such art forms as installations and performances together with video recordings of talks, symposia etc. Part of the project will be the evaluation of certain tools such as audio-visual indexing for the domain of media art.\n\nThe participating organisations\nThe initiative networks an important group of cultural institutions which have large collections of artworks and documentations at their disposal and aims at a technical, formal and content-oriented integrative solution that will allow for later inclusion of further collections and institutions from all over Europe. Initially the task set is to integrate the group of associated archives: Ludwig Boltzmann Institut Medien.Kunst.Forschung mit Ars Electronica in Linz , argos – interdisciplinary centre for art and audiovisual media in Brussels, C3 Center for Culture and Communication Foundation in Budapest, Heure Exquise! in ~Mons-en-Baroeul, Les INSTANT VIDEO Numériques et poétiques in Marseille, Netherlands Institut voor Mediakunst Montevideo/time based Arts in Amsterdam, SCCA Center for Contemporary Arts in Ljubljana and Stiftelsen Filmforum in Stockholm. You may also include a {} parameter to specify the 'tooltip' text that will appear whenever the mouse is moved over the onClick link text\n\nExternal script source files:\nYou can also load javascript from an external source URL, by including a src="..." parameter in the initial {} marker (e.g., {}). This is particularly useful when incorporating third-party javascript libraries for use in custom extensions and plugins. The 'foreign' javascript code remains isolated in a separate file that can be easily replaced whenever an updated library file becomes available.\n\nDisplay script source in tiddler output\nBy including the keyword parameter "show", in the initial {} marker, the plugin will include the script source code in the output that it displays in the tiddler.\n\nDefining javascript functions and libraries:\nAlthough the external javascript file is loaded while the tiddler content is being rendered, any functions it defines will not be available for use until //after// the rendering has been completed. Thus, you cannot load a library and //immediately// use it's functions within the same tiddler. However, once that tiddler has been loaded, the library functions can be freely used in any tiddler (even the one in which it was initially loaded).\n\nTo ensure that your javascript functions are always available when needed, you should load the libraries from a tiddler that will be rendered as soon as your TiddlyWiki document is opened. For example, you could put your {} syntax into a tiddler called LoadScripts, and then add {} in your MainMenu tiddler.\n\nSince the MainMenu is always rendered immediately upon opening your document, the library will always be loaded before any other tiddlers that rely upon the functions it defines. Loading an external javascript library does not produce any direct output in the tiddler, so these definitions should have no impact on the appearance of your MainMenu.\n\nCreating dynamic tiddler content\nAn important difference between this implementation of embedded scripting and conventional embedded javascript techniques for web pages is the method used to produce output that is dynamically inserted into the document:\n* In a typical web document, you use the document.write() function to output text sequences (often containing HTML tags) that are then rendered when the entire document is first loaded into the browser window.\n* However, in a ~TiddlyWiki document, tiddlers (and other DOM elements) are created, deleted, and rendered "on-the-fly", so writing directly to the global 'document' object does not produce the results you want (i.e., replacing the embedded script within the tiddler content), and completely replaces the entire ~TiddlyWiki document in your browser window.\n* To allow these scripts to work unmodified, the plugin automatically converts all occurences of document.write() so that the output is inserted into the tiddler content instead of replacing the entire ~TiddlyWiki document.\n\nIf your script does not use document.write() to create dynamically embedded content within a tiddler, your javascript can, as an alternative, explicitly return a text value that the plugin can then pass through the wikify() rendering engine to insert into the tiddler display. For example, using {} will produce the same output as {}.\n\n//Note: your script code is automatically 'wrapped' inside a function, {}, so that any return value you provide can be correctly handled by the plugin and inserted into the tiddler. To avoid unpredictable results (and possibly fatal execution errors), this function should never be redefined or called from within your script code.//\n\nAccessing the ~TiddlyWiki DOM\nThe plugin provides one pre-defined variable, 'place', that is passed in to your javascript code so that it can have direct access to the containing DOM element into which the tiddler output is currently being rendered.\n\nAccess to this DOM element allows you to create scripts that can:\n* vary their actions based upon the specific location in which they are embedded\n* access 'tiddler-relative' information (use findContainingTiddler(place))\n* perform direct DOM manipulations (when returning wikified text is not enough)\n<<<\n!!!!!Examples\n<<<\nan "alert" message box:\n>dynamic output:\n><script show>\n return (new Date()).toString();\n</script>\nwikified dynamic output:\n><script show>\n return "link to current user: "+config.options.txtUserName+"";\n</script>\ndynamic output using 'place' to get size information for current tiddler:\n><script show>\n if (!window.story) window.story=window;\n var title=story.findContainingTiddler(place).id.substr(7);\n return title+" is using "+store.getTiddlerText(title).length+" bytes";\n</script>\ncreating an 'onclick' button/link that runs a script:\n><script label="click here" title="clicking this link will show an 'alert' box" show>\n if (!window.story) window.story=window;\n alert("Hello World!\snlinktext='"+place.firstChild.data+"'\sntiddler='"+story.findContainingTiddler(place).id.substr(7)+"'");\n</script>\nloading a script from a source url:\n>http://www.TiddlyTools.com/demo.js contains:\n>>{{{function demo() { alert('this output is from demo(), defined in demo.js') } }}}\n>>{}\n><script src="demo.js" show>\n return "loading demo.js..."\n</script>\n><script label="click to execute demo() function" show>\n demo()\n</script>\n<<<\n!!!!!Installation\n<<<\nimport (or copy/paste) the following tiddlers into your document:\nInlineJavascriptPlugin (tagged with <<tag systemConfig>>)\n<<<\n!!!!!Revision History\n<<<\n2007.02.19 [1.6.0] added support for title="..." to specify mouseover tooltip when using an onclick (label="...") script\n2006.10.16 [1.5.2] add newline before closing '}' in 'function out_' wrapper. The order of this tiddler display depends upon when and where you have clicked. Some people like this non-linear method of reading the document, while others have reported that when many tiddlers have been opened, it can get somewhat confusing.\n\n!!!!!Usage\n<<<\nSinglePageMode allows you to configure TiddlyWiki to navigate more like a traditional multipage web site with only one item displayed at a time. When SinglePageMode is enabled, the title of the current tiddler is automatically displayed in the browser window's titlebar and the browser's location URL is updated with a 'permalink' for the current tiddler so that it is easier to create a browser 'bookmark' for the current tiddler.\n\nEven when SinglePageMode is disabled (i.e., displaying multiple tiddlers is permitted), you can reduce the potential for confusion by enable TopOfPageMode, which forces tiddlers to always open at the top of the page instead of being displayed following the tiddler containing the link that was clicked.\n<<<\n!!!!!Configuration\n<<<\nWhen installed, this plugin automatically adds checkboxes in the AdvancedOptions tiddler so you can enable/disable the plugin behavior. @@color(#CC0000):From digital data to digital assets@@\n\n~IN2 supports access to multimedia content by combining concepts from knowledge management, artificial intelligence and human-computer-interaction. The technology can be employed both in the indexing, by providing automatic tools, and the retrieval side by enabling multimedia search capabilities. Using state-of-the-art methods of content-based multimedia indexing, we provide solutions and services for the automatic extraction of metadata for image, audio and video content. \n\nOur tools detect shot boundaries, extract key-frames and other audio-visual information like camera and object motion, speech and sound events. Furthermore, multimedia material can be described almost textually using features like colour, texture, and shape, enabling visual queries and providing alternative and complementary visual search capabilities that can be used to allow customers to find fast and easy the desired content.\n\nSeveral systems in co-operation with top research institutions, industrial partners, content providers and content owners to automatically index image and video documents have been developed in the framework of several European and national projects. These systems have been successfully evaluated and installed for TV archives, e-learning environments that use video content, and Internet image and film databases and are providing a set of technologies that can be easy customised to transform your multimedia data to digital assets.\n\n<<tiddler HideTiddlerToolbar>> <<tiddler HideTiddlerSubtitle>> <<tiddler HideTiddlerTags>>

18 March 2007\nuWEAR will examine a user centred design approach for testing the application of wearable computing in outdoor and indoor navigation scenarios for visual impaired users, adapting existing http://www.wearITatWork.com wearable interfaces and extending those to fit to users with special needs and elderly. The project builds upon the large diversity of input and output interfaces offered in wearable solutions, that enable wearable computing to address many more users and use cases than traditional computing. The uWEAR take-up scenario will use standard wearable computers, e.g. the OQO, and a http://www.mrc-bremen.de to interact with the information that will enable visual impaired to get support when and where they need it, allowing them to receive instructions, ask for advice, and communicate with others. Special attention will be paid to how users with special needs can benefit from using wearable computing and what input and output interfaces are appropriate in order to support navigation tasks, thus extending the current ~WearIT@Work project scenarios within the eInclusion context.\n\nThe uWEAR take-up action puts a strong focus on exploiting the project results by first bringing those to the assistive technology market and second by mainstreaming those for other type of users and use cases. Through several iterative developments and test settings, it is ensured that wearable technology fits the user requirements in each project phase, thus delivering solutions accepted by special user groups but which can also be extended to other types of users.
